Material enters a factory as raw material and leaves it as a finished product. In between, the material is processed in a number of work places inside the factory. So it has to be moved from one work places to the other.

Example:-
1. The material has to be moved from stores to shop floor,one machine to the other machines, from one shop to the other,shop floor to package Section etc.
2. The process of moving the material from one location to another is called material handling.
Material handling involves the movement of material , manually or mechanically in batches or one at a time within the plant. The movement may be horizontal , vertical or the combination of horizontal and vertical.
It has been established that the average cost of material handling is about 20% to 60% of the total cost of production.
Sometimes,a component may have been handled 50 times or more before it is converted into finished product.
Thus,it is clear that cost of production can be considerably reduced by reducing material handling cost. Moreover it has been found that about 40% of industrial accidents occur due to bad method adopted in material handling.
Hence extreme care should be taken while planning material handling activities.

परिचय:
सामग्री कच्चे माल के रूप में एक कारखाने में प्रवेश करती है और इसे तैयार उत्पाद के रूप में छोड़ देती है। बीच में, सामग्री को कारखाने के अंदर कई कार्य स्थानों में संसाधित किया जाता है। इसलिए इसे एक काम के स्थानों से दूसरे स्थान पर ले जाना होगा।

उदाहरण:-
1. सामग्री को स्टोर से शॉप फ्लोर, एक मशीन से दूसरी मशीन, एक शॉप से दूसरी, शॉप फ्लोर से पैकेज मशीन आदि में ले जाना पड़ता है।
2. सामग्री को एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर ले जाने की प्रक्रिया को सामग्री हैंडलिंग कहा जाता है।
सामग्री हैंडलिंग में सामग्री की आवाजाही, मैन्युअल या यंत्रवत् बैचों में या एक समय संयंत्र के भीतर शामिल होती है। आंदोलन क्षैतिज, ऊर्ध्वाधर या क्षैतिज और ऊर्ध्वाधर के संयोजन हो सकता है।
यह स्थापित किया गया है कि सामग्री की हैंडलिंग की औसत लागत उत्पादन की कुल लागत का लगभग 20% से 60% है।
कभी-कभी, एक घटक को तैयार उत्पाद में परिवर्तित होने से पहले 50 बार या उससे अधिक संभाला जा सकता है।
इस प्रकार, यह स्पष्ट है कि उत्पादन की लागत को सामग्री हैंडलिंग लागत को कम करके काफी कम किया जा सकता है। इसके अलावा यह पाया गया है कि लगभग 40% औद्योगिक दुर्घटनाएँ सामग्री के संचालन में अपनाई गई खराब पद्धति के कारण होती हैं।
इसलिए सामग्री हैंडलिंग गतिविधियों की योजना बनाते समय अत्यधिक सावधानी बरती जानी चाहिए।
