 The following factors are considered while selecting material handling equipments.

1. Material to be moved

   * Size of material, shape , weight , strength - nature (solid, liquid or gas) etc.

   * For example small components can be moved only using containers.

2. Path of travel

  * Horizontal - vertical - combination.

  * Fixed path - variable path

3. Types of buildings

  * Floor load capacity - ceiling heights - strength of trucks.

  * Column spacings - door size - location of columns.

4. Space Available

  * If floor space is limited but overhead space is available cranes and hoists are preferred.

  * If both floor space and over head space are limited, smaller truck and mobile conveyors are preferred.

5. Required handling capacity

  * The load to be moved within a time gap.

  * The frequency of movement

6. Types of production Activity

  * Mass production - Conveyors are suitable.

  * Batch production - powered trucks are suitable.

7. Cost of material handling equipment.

8. Operating costs.

9. Expected life of equipment.

10. Care and maintenance required for the handling equipments.
